The Deer Hunter

Muzzleloader season opened today. At the ripe old age of 54, it's my first time hunting with a muzzleloader. In fact, it's my first time hunting deer. In fact, it's my first time hunting anything. Fortunately, a friend at the day job has taken me under his wing and is showing me what's what.

For the time being, I'm only out for bucks -- so the two big, beautiful does who flew by about 20 yards from my position were safe, as was the undersized doe who did the same thing a little later. Those were all the deer I saw today. Saw a lot of cold, cold wind and snow, though.

The score so far: Bambi 1, me nuthin'. I have a couple of vacation days (or "PTO" days, as we now call them) left. I think I'll try to slip off one day this coming week and even the score.

Oh, no-o-o! Don't kill those
pretty creatures! However, I don't equate killing animals with killing children in other countries, so if you must...

*kat turns her head away....wipes a tear....*

then she waves and with a twinkle in her eye, says,

Hi Jim! :-)

Where I come from, Jim, deer hunting means that you're a real man. :)
You know, I used to be one of those guns-should-be-allowed-because-the-deer-hunters-need-them kinda girls, but now I realize that guns have an even higher calling, such as protecting yourself from the government and others. Whatever the case may be, welcome to the world of deer hunting. Are you using a deer stand? Good hunting luck to you!

cheers,
tricia

Hi, Thinking Mama!

I certainly agree that hunting has absolutely nothing to do with the constitutional imperative of the citizenry being armed. Well, maybe "varmint" hunting could be called the reason, assuming that we understand "varmints" to be two-legged and employed by our glorious gooberment.

My hunting weapon wouldn't be very practical for defense from our supervisors and their operatives. It's a muzzleloader, so after firing, I need to be busy for a minute or two before being ready to fire again. Worse yet, after firing five or six rounds, I need at least a cursory cleaning before I can continue. So, apart from hunting, it's strictly a hobby weapon. I have others, though, that are useful for other purposes.

No, I'm not using a stand ... I'm being a ground hunter. For the present, at least.

Kat, Mimi: I'm starting to think you have no cause for concern. The deer seem immune to me, at least so far.
